Haikus for Carol

(for a dear friend who committed suicide)

       i

the inrushing sea

reaches for the swift ankles

of fleeing sandbirds

      ii

on a recent day

it caught the slow ankles of

a woman, a friend

      iii

now soft surf music

whispers, and i’m wondering:

where has her voice gone?

      iv

sea draws its bright glass

across the sand; small clams hide,

leave only bubbles
